Ferozkoh: Tradition and Continuity in Afghan Art

Ferozkoh: Tradition and Continuity in Afghan Art is an exhibition of works created by students and teachers from the Turquoise Mountain Institute in Kabul. Each piece was inspired by an object from the collection of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, and these historic objects are also on display. The show is open from 15th November - 23rd February 2014 at Leighton House Museum in Holland Park - please come and see it!

Please see the flyer below for the exhibition and accompanying events programme which starts on 22nd November with an evening of Afghan music and singing with the incredible Afghan father and son tabla players Ustad Asif and Yusuf Mahmoud and their band. All the events are free and bookings can be made through our website:

3 Dimensional Life Drawing!

My friend and fellow RCA graduate Rosanna Martin and i are offering workshops in 3 Dimensional Life Drawing.
Please see the info on the poster, and feel free to get in touch for any further information.

These are some pictures of our little studio, where i've been working for the last month. I'm getting more installed, bit by bit.
It's in a big old factory, right next to New Cross Gate.

As you can see, it's most suitable for small-scale work. Soon i'll also be working at the new Turning Earth studio, where there'll be more space, and access to larger kilns and wheels and things. I'll also be teaching an Introductory Ceramics class there, starting on 12 November.

Loopart is delighted to present “A Field of Character” in partnership with Deptford X Art Festival. This celebration of work is the culmination of 10 artists three-month sculpture residency.

The works exhibited represents each artist’s journey through their medium in response to their community and environment. Collectively the celebration challenges the concept of the ‘exhibition’ by breaking the boundaries of a studio-based environment and bringing this into the public realm.

“A Field of Character” has been curated by Luisa Spina and Laura Martin.

Artitsts include: Anna Louise Hale, Dylan Spencer, Emma Fitts, Ester Svensson, Joe Stevens, Katy Wallwork, Luisa Spina, Nicole Mollett – Davidson, Sarah Tew, Sophia Demetriou and guest artist: Joachim Deville

Loopart13 is an artist led, not-for-profit initiative run by Luisa Spina. It aims to bring together groups of artists who are interested in creating a platform for artist development and create future collaborations.

another cloud...

At the moment i don't have a kiln and things like that (though my lovely and talented friend Lydia Hardwick is letting me use hers to fire the little figures), but i do have a lot of space, so i thought i'd make a big un-ceramic cloud. I found some really big balloons on e-bay.
It's for our group-show, A Field of Character, which will be during Deptford X at the end of September. More info to follow about that...

Monday, 8 July 2013

I've graduated, taken down the degree show, and moved all my stuff out of the RCA.
It's been a really good couple of years.

And now i'm starting something new!
I'm taking part in a residency with an artists group called Loopart13, in Deptford (Southeast London). There's 11 of us, mostly sculptors, with a space to work in and a show at the end.

This is going to be 'my' space to work in for the next 3 months. So much space!

But before i get working i'm off to Sweden for a week to run around in the forest.

This is the show at night.
(The glass mountain glows nicely in the dark).
It's still open for a few more days, til the 30th (except for on Friday 28th, when we graduate).

Welcome to the RCA Show 2013!

the large glass mountains

here they are, straight out of the kiln! they turned out better than i anticipated.
sorry about the photos - better quality ones could follow later, after they get cleaned up and finished.

the small glass mountains

i made the moulds for these little mountains before the easter break, and they were waiting (patiently) for this week. Anthony, one of the glass technicians, helped me pour liquid glass into the moulds, and today they came out! i'm amazed. i ground the bases a little this afternoon, and then i'll have to polish them up and sandblast on Monday.

There's two massive mountains still in the kiln. solid glass.

i've also been making some more tiny figures. these are only bisquit-fired, without their bases.
time is starting to go faster and faster. there's less than two months now till the degree show is up...

Steve Ramsay from Imperial College came and gave a little lamp-working workshop yseterday lunchtime. He made it look very easy...

... but it's not!
I had a go today at making some bubbles (un-round) and hands. The one in the centre is particularly sad, stump-fingered.

Roots & a Robin in Regent's Park

On Friday i cycled up to Regent's park, in the snow, searching for roots. A helpful arboricultural officer that i'd e-mailed had told me about a tree that had recently fallen down, so i found some good ones.
A little robin hopped about really close to me, completely unafraid - looking for bugs and worms, i guess, though i don't think he found many in the snow...
